A seven-bedroom lakehouse on Allen Lake, 13 minutes from downtown Blue Ridge. It sleeps 22, and a bookshelf in the game room hides a speakeasy.
Behind the bookshelf
In the game room, past the arcade machines, a bookshelf swings open on a speakeasy: royal-blue velvet curtains, a green velvet sofa, a bar lined with leather stools, black-and-white portraits and a poker table under a neon sign. It's set up for a bar, so bring your own bottles.
Bistro lights in the trees and the decks aglow above the fire pit and the Adirondack chairs.
On the water
The lawn runs down to a private dock on Allen Lake, a small lake kept free of motors. Two paddleboards, kayaks and life jackets are yours, the fishing is off the dock, and a creek runs beside the property into the lake. Mornings are quiet here; sunsets are golden.
Four on the main level and three below, plus a queen pull-out in the lower living room. The seventh, The Log Lounge, has a king in a handcrafted log frame.
After dark
Two decks and a patio step down to a wood-burning fire pit ringed with Adirondack chairs, bistro lights in the trees and a 7-person hot tub with LED lights. There's a telescope that connects to most smartphones, for when the stars come out over the lake.
The theater was a big hit too. We’re not exactly dancers, so we turned it into a karaoke room and sang our hearts out at the reception. Everyone had a blast!
